Thinking By
Mark watson

Think Globally, act locally!
Mark Watson brings with him a 3-days Design Jam workshop to the Odisha Design Week focussing on the richness of Odisha culture and its implementation in innovative solutions through design thinking in fusion between heritage and smart city developments.

Based on the grand challenge theme and extended through the Global Goals with the UNDP, the concept of Design Jams has been with us for a decade.

The UNDP Education Division seeing the benefit to communities of these rapid prototyping Design Jams empowering impactful concept generation and presentation skills, linked up with the Digital Society School with Hogeschool van Amsterdam to utilise their design toolkits to tackle wicked problems within their local communities.

What started out 5 years ago as a small international network has now blossomed to 90 cities around the world all Jamming to the SDGs to think globally and act Locally.

The 2 day Design Jam is a sprint through the design process culminating in a pitch presentation aimed at an incubator ready submission to take to Government or Private sector to seek support for these value propositions.

The proposed Odisha Design Week workshop will look at SDGs #11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and #9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure looking locally at Odisha and its deep cultural heritage and innovation through smart cities and technology.

Teaming up with Industry from the Culture and Experience Economy sector, designers will co-design solutions to problems with a post COVID focus on low fidelity (but easily scalable) concepts to capture opportunities and fiscal stimulus from local and international tourism.
